How inaccurate rhymes reveal Old Norse vowel phonemes

چکیده

This article discusses so-called inaccurate rhymes in Old Norse dróttkvætt poetry and their bearing on the phoneme structure of Norse. Inaccurate between /ǫ/ /a/ do occur, but were to some extent avoided poems eleventh twelfth century. The same applies /ǫ́/ /á/ second half avoidance confirms status as a by providing, indirectly, an opposition /ǫ́/. Furthermore, diphthong /ja/ vowel used infrequently tenth century, /jó/ /ó/ not rhymed at all. Thus treated sequence consonant /j/ vowel.
